S275 and S355 are European grades under EN 10025-2, with minimum yield strengths of 275 and 355 MPa. ASTM A36 and A572 Grade 50 are American grades at about 250 and 345 MPa. S355 and A572 Grade 50 are close but not identical, so the project specification and the engineer of record decide whether one can replace the other.
Structural steel grades appear in UAE specifications in both European and American form, often within the same package. A consultant may call for S355 while a supplier quotes ASTM A572 Grade 50, and the substitution stalls approval until someone confirms the two are not identical. This guide compares S275, S355, ASTM A36 and A572 Grade 50: what each designation means, how the properties differ, where each is used and how to specify the right one when working with steel fabrication companies in UAE.
A structural steel grade names a steel's standard and its minimum strength, so engineers and fabricators know exactly what material to supply. In European grades, S stands for structural steel and the number is the minimum yield strength in megapascals (MPa). ASTM grades use standard designations instead, such as A36 or A572 Grade 50.
Yield strength is the stress at which steel starts to deform permanently. Tensile strength is the maximum stress it carries before fracture. S235 is the lowest grade in the same European standard, at 235 MPa. A grade name alone is not a full specification, because sub-grade, thickness and test requirements also matter.
A structural steel grade sets minimum yield strength, and the standard sets how that strength is tested.
S275 and S355 are non-alloy structural steel grades under EN 10025-2, with minimum yield strengths of 275 and 355 MPa for thicknesses up to 16 mm. S355 offers about 29% more yield strength than S275. In the UK the standard is published as BS EN 10025-2, and it is widely used on projects in Europe.
Tensile strength is 410 to 560 MPa for S275 and 470 to 630 MPa for S355. Yield strength falls as thickness rises, so S355 drops to 345 MPa between 16 and 40 mm. The S355 vs S275 decision usually comes down to load, span and toughness. Impact toughness is set by the sub-grade, tested by Charpy at 27 J:
Choose the grade for strength and the sub-grade for toughness.
ASTM A36 and A572 Grade 50 are the American structural grades most often specified alongside European ones. A36 has a minimum yield strength of 250 MPa (36 ksi). A572 Grade 50 is a high-strength low-alloy steel with 345 MPa (50 ksi), about 38% more than A36.
Tensile strength is 400 to 550 MPa for A36 and at least 450 MPa for A572 Grade 50. Both are supplied to the general requirements of ASTM A6, which covers tolerances and testing, and they are common on projects in the USA. Impact testing applies only when the purchaser specifies it. For ASTM A36 vs A572, strength is the main difference. ASTM A992 is the usual grade for wide-flange beams in US building frames, also at 50 ksi minimum yield.
A36 is the general-purpose American grade, and A572 Grade 50 is the higher-strength choice.
No. S355 and A572 Grade 50 are close, and S275 and A36 are broadly comparable, but none are identical. Yield, tensile limits, toughness requirements and chemistry differ, and the design codes behind them differ too. Any substitution needs written approval from the structural consultant.
Published steel grade equivalents are a starting point, not an approval. Compare the details:
| Grade | Standard | Min. yield strength (MPa) | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| S235 | EN 10025-2 | 235 | Light secondary steelwork |
| S275 | EN 10025-2 | 275 | General framing under moderate loads and spans |
| S355 | EN 10025-2 | 355 | Heavier loads, long spans, industrial and high-rise frames |
| ASTM A36 | ASTM A36 | 250 | General framing, plates and base plates |
| ASTM A572 Grade 50 | ASTM A572 | 345 | Heavier loads, long spans, industrial frames |
| ASTM A992 | ASTM A992 | 345 | Wide-flange beams and columns in building frames |
Values are for material up to 16 mm thick. Yield strength falls for thicker European sections.
Equivalent on paper is not approved on site: a grade swap needs consultant sign-off.
S275 and A36 suit general building framing, where loads and spans are moderate. S355 and A572 Grade 50 suit heavier loads, long spans, high-rise frames and industrial structures, where higher yield strength reduces member size. The engineer of record selects the grade, so the drawings set it, not the fabricator.
Which structural steel grades UAE projects use depends on the design code the consultant adopts, which is why European and American grades both appear in UAE packages.
Thick plates and critical welded connections may call for J0 or J2 toughness even where strength alone would allow JR.
The design code sets the grade family, and the load and span set the grade.
A higher steel grade can reduce tonnage where strength governs the design, but it can also change welding procedures and material availability. S355 and A572 Grade 50 members may be lighter than S275 or A36 equivalents, while preheat, heat input limits and lead time depend on grade and thickness.
Stiffness does not change with grade, because the elastic modulus is about the same for all of them. Where deflection or stability governs, a higher grade saves no steel. For welding, the carbon equivalent on the mill certificate shows how hard the steel may get next to a weld. A higher value and a thicker section raise the risk of cracking, so preheat may be needed. Some sections and plate thicknesses are not stocked in every grade, which affects lead time. See how steel fabrication cost in Dubai is built up for the wider picture.
A higher grade saves steel only where strength, not stiffness, governs the member.
Name the standard, the grade and the sub-grade on the drawings and in the RFQ, for example EN 10025-2 S355J2 or ASTM A572 Grade 50. Ask for EN 10204 3.1 mill certificates, and agree any substitution with the consultant before material is ordered.
The same approach applies in Dubai and across the GCC. Use this checklist:
At ASSENT STEEL, material is checked against the specified grade and its mill certificate at receipt, before cutting begins.
A complete designation and an EN 10204 3.1 certificate remove most grade disputes before cutting starts.
S275, S355, ASTM A36 and A572 Grade 50 are not interchangeable labels, so the right structural steel grades depend on the design code, the load and the approval route. Specify the full designation, request EN 10204 3.1 certificates and settle substitutions early. ASSENT STEEL fabricates at Dubai Industrial City, UAE, to the grade named on your approved drawings. To price a package, request a fabrication quote with your drawings and material specification.
S355 has a higher minimum yield strength than S275: 355 MPa against 275 MPa for thicknesses up to 16 mm. It also has higher tensile limits, so it carries more load per section. Both sit under EN 10025-2 and both come in JR, J0 and J2 toughness sub-grades.
